When people think of outdoor photography, they often picture golden hour.

That magical hour before sunset when the light softens, the air begins to cool and everything takes on a warm, golden glow.

While I don't often recommend golden hour for young family sessions (bedtime usually wins!), it's a completely different story for maternity photography.

Why Golden Hour Works So Beautifully

Pregnancy is a quieter season of life.

There's no need to chase toddlers through the woods or work around nap times. Instead, we can slow down, wander together and make the most of the beautiful evening light.

As the sun drops lower in the sky, it wraps gently around you, creating soft, flattering light that feels calm, romantic and timeless.

The Perfect Time to Slow Down

My maternity sessions are never rushed.

We'll wander through one of London's beautiful green spaces, stopping whenever the light catches your eye or a view feels just right.

Some of the most beautiful photographs happen in the final few minutes before the sun disappears, when the light becomes soft enough to create silhouettes, glowing backlight and gentle, natural portraits.

The Best Locations for Golden Hour in London

Not every location works equally well.

I tend to choose places with open views where the evening sun can filter across the landscape, allowing us to enjoy that beautiful golden light for as long as possible.

Over the years, I've discovered some wonderful locations across London where the light, landscape and season come together perfectly.

More Than Beautiful Light

Of course, golden hour is lovely.

But what matters most is how the photographs feel.

Pregnancy is such a short chapter. These sessions are about creating space to pause, breathe and celebrate the quiet anticipation before everything changes.
