A September family photoshoot in Cherry Tree Wood, East Finchley
September is one of my favourite months for family photography in North London. The light turns soft and golden, the woods are still green, and the first leaves are just starting to drop. This session in Cherry Tree Wood, East Finchley, was a lovely example.
This family came with two young children, and the plan was simple: no stiff poses, no pressure to smile on cue. We wandered through the trees, stopped when something caught the children's attention, and let the photographs happen around that.
Little ones don't do well with a long list of instructions, so I keep everything light. We sat on a fallen log, shuffled closer together and let the toddler show us her sunhat. The best frames come from moments like that, with the grown-ups relaxed and the children simply being themselves.
Why Cherry Tree Wood works so well for families
For a family living in or near East Finchley, a local wood is a wonderful setting:
It's familiar. Children settle faster in a place that feels like theirs.
It's compact. Only a short walk from the playground or parking, which is free on the weekends. Perfect for little legs to wander without anyone worrying about getting the "perfect" shot.
The light is gentle. Tall trees filter the sun into soft, dappled light, which is kind on faces and flattering for everyone.
Dressing for a woodland session
This family wore everyday, comfortable clothes in blue, navy and a bright pink, which looked lovely against the greens and browns of the wood. You don't need to match. Pick outfits your children can sit, climb and crouch in, and I'll take care of the rest.
